Ashley – A letter from her mom

Ashley, like many addicts was a warm, loving, giving and funny person.  She would give her last dollar to a stranger or her favorite item of clothing to someone in need.  I remember when she came home from kindergarten one day and said “mommy, the school is asking us to donate our change from our lunch money to the children of 9/11 fund”. She proceeded to tell her father and I that she wanted to donate her piggy bank.  It was a large glass Mickey Mouse piggy bank that had to be broken open, she could not even lift it. I asked her if she was sure she wanted to do that, I said, we could just give her money to bring to school.  She replied with mommy those kids lost their parents, I have you and daddy. I have all I need! They need it more than I do.  It brought tears to my eyes.  The next day I took her and her piggy bank to school and she donated it to the fund.  Ashley died 2 years to the day that she started using heroin.  She tried for 22 of those months to quit using heroin and could never find her way out for good.  I know she would want others to learn from her death.  She tried to help others even when she couldn’t help herself.  9/25/1996- 12/20/2016.
